Today's vehicles are sometimes very intricate and much like how an engine inside of a car needs to be tuned up or fixed so that it continues running smoothly; air conditioners too have components that need regular servicing to make sure they're operating reliably and efficiently. Driving around all day might heat things up. When the natural process of evaporation occurs overtime or there are minor leaks in the AC system, refrigerant pressure decreases meaning your vehicle's AC is about to break down sooner than later! As such, it's crucial to regularly check for any signs of leaking or corrosion from rubber seals. Keeping your AC at its optimum performance level once a year can help avoid expensive breakdowns, keep passengers safe by preventing the build up of icky substances, and a well-serviced AC actually saves you money because your fuel consumption goes down! If refrigerant starts to evaporate or leak your air con system will begin to deteriorate and will have to work harder, increasing your fuel consumption. Therefore it is important to scrutinise the condition of the rubber seals regularly for any signs of leaks or weakness which may be a signal of refrigerant loss. When an A/C Repair Is More Than a Re-Gas Not every air-conditioning fault can be fixed with a simple re-gas. Some leaks can be hidden deep within the vehicle and require specialist diagnosis, extensive disassembly and careful repairs. For a real-world example, see our Full Air-Conditioning Restoration – 2020 Nissan Patrol case study, where the Rawson Motors team traced a refrigerant leak to damaged A/C pipework between the body and chassis and carried out a major restoration to return the system to reliable operation. A car air conditioning service every twelve months means you may assist protection from costly breakdowns now and in the future, keep passengers safe by helping to prevent the build-up of potentially harmful substances and a well serviced vehicle air conditioning system actually saves you money because it expends less fuel. Rawson Motors care about the environment and have Arctick Authorisation (AU51705) to reliably and responsibly conduct automotive air conditioning regas, repairs, inspection and servicing. Book your car air conditioning service with the professionals at Rawson Motors today! Learn more about Car Air Conditioning How do air conditioners work? A car air conditioner system is composed of four essential parts : A belt-driven pump known as a compressor to compress and circulate gas. A radiator like unit called a condenser to redistribute heat and condense gas to a liquid. An expansion device, which could be a thermal expansion valve (TXV) or an orifice tube (subject to the kind of air-con system used). Some systems have an accumulator before the compressor to remove moisture from the refrigerant while TXV systems have a receiver-dryer before the evaporator performs the same crucial task. Both of these parts also store refrigerant. Car air conditioning is designed to pull the heat from the air within the car's interior area and transfer it outside, leaving only cooled or 'conditioned' air to be redistributed. Hot air is passed across a gas-filled evaporator, where the heat is easily absorbed by the refrigerant (in gas form), effectively removing the heat from the air in the car. The now heated gas is pulled through the compressor where it is further heated (via compression). The next stage involves the refrigerant being forced through the condenser to extract the refrigerant's heat quickly. The refrigerant, now condensed to a liquid, then moves through the expansion device (either a TXV or Orifice tube), which regulates the refrigerant's flow to the evaporator, changing the high-pressure liquid to a low-pressure mist (gas). A fan blowing over the evaporator's cold fins produces the cold air being blown into the car, and the entire process then begins all over again. Does the car air conditioner use more fuel? Yes! Your car air conditioning is using fuel. However, it's actually more fuel efficient to run car air conditioning than it is to have your windows down due to aerodynamic drag. If your air conditioning isn't performing its best, it may use more fuel to run. To avoid this, it's important that you have your air conditioning serviced regularly by professionals, like the ones at Rawson Motors. What's the cause of the bad smell in car air conditioning? The damp environment can promote microbes, bacteria and even fungus growth inside the evaporator core. This can lead to nasty smells and possibly even be bad for the health of any vehicle occupants. Although modern evaporator units tend to be more efficient, they have more fins, meaning an increased capability to trap moisture and allow for micro-organism development. How do I know my car air conditioning is due for a service? If you cannot remember when your air conditioning was last serviced, perhaps it's time to book in with the team at Rawson Motors. You should also book in if: Your air conditioning system is blowing warm air There are damp patches or water stains under your dashboard Your car air conditioning system smells funny Your car air conditioning system is making strange noises There is weak air flow from the car air conditioning system Why does the car air conditioner need to be serviced? Car air conditioning is designed to pull the heat from the air within the interior area of the car outside, leaving only cooled or 'conditioned' air to be redistributed. This is achieved using a special compound called refrigerant, capable of readily absorbing heat as a gas and quickly losing heat as a liquid. The compressor needs the right amount of oil in the refrigerant to prevent it from seizing up. Should the air filters be jammed with dirt and bacteria, it will affect the entire system's performance, and it can even cause it to stop working altogether. On top of inhibiting air conditioner efficiency, dirty air filters can cause health problems. Being exposed to the elements and very diverse operating conditions and being used intermittently rather than being 'Always On' can cause decay of the hoses, connections and seals. A vehicle air conditioning system should be examined regularly to ensure there are no problems or refrigerant loss due to failure or leakage from these points. Simply by cooling the air in your car under normal running conditions, the air filters get dirty and intermittent use can cause seals to dry and crack, allowing them to leak. Even without leaks, the gas in a car air conditioning system will eventually begin to degrade or evaporate over time. It should be recharged as required to keep the air con system in peak running condition. How often should a car air conditioner be serviced? Your automotive air conditioning system needs to be examined once a year for any signs of problems with the seals, hoses and connections and confirm there is no refrigerant reduction over time. Regularly servicing your automotive air conditioner system keeps refrigerant at optimum levels meaning the system does not need to work as hard. This, in turn, protects the system from damage and minimises fuel expenditure. Can I service my own car air conditioner? Only qualified mechanics with the appropriate training, like the ones at Rawson Motors, should attempt to service a car air conditioner. Specific licences are required to service or repair some types of car air conditioning systems, especially where re-gas (recharging of the refrigerant) is concerned. Strict guidelines and procedures must be adhered to when handling certain refrigerants, which must always be fully recovered and not allowed to escape into the atmosphere during servicing. Refrigerant can also pose serious health risks if mishandled. Specialist equipment is also required as the air conditioning system is under extreme pressure and must be pulled into a deep vacuum to remove any moisture, to avoid seriously damaging the system. You can find out more about licensing on the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARC) Website.

Engines that operate through internal combustion rely on large amounts of clean air to ensure the fuel burns properly and generates the power needed to drive the vehicle. At Rawson Motors in Officer, we understand how vital it is to keep your car's air filter in good condition as part of protecting your engine's health. Your engine requires extremely clean air to function efficiently. Dirt, dust, and other particles entering the engine can cause serious damage. That’s where the air filter comes into play. It ensures the air entering the combustion chambers is clean, shielding key engine components such as the pistons and cylinders from wear and damage. Why Replace Your Air Filter? Save on Fuel Costs: Your engine requires the correct balance of fuel and air to run efficiently. A clogged air filter restricts airflow, causing your engine to run inefficiently – often referred to as ‘running rich.’ This not only puts additional stress on your engine but can also increase fuel consumption by up to 10%. No one likes spending more on petrol than necessary! Protect Your Engine: Over time, air filters become clogged and weaker, increasing the risk of damage. A damaged or overly dirty air filter can allow harmful particles to enter the engine, potentially leading to expensive repairs. Benefits of Replacing Your Air Filter: Extends the life of your engine Improves fuel efficiency Reduces vehicle emissions At Rawson Motors, we always check the condition of your air filter during every full car service. Whether it’s a major or minor service, or one that follows your manufacturer’s handbook or logbook guidelines, you can trust us to keep your engine running smoothly.

Keep your engine healthy with clean air filters. Improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and extend engine life. Visit Rawson Motors for expert maintenance and reliable car servicing.

At Rawson Motors in Officer, we know how important it is to ensure your vehicle is safe and roadworthy. Whether you’re selling your car, re-registering it, or addressing a defect notice, obtaining a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) is essential. As a fully licensed vehicle tester, Rawson Motors is your go-to destination for comprehensive inspections and certifications. Let’s break down everything you need to know about RWCs and how we can help. What is a Roadworthy Certificate? A Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) is an official document that confirms a vehicle is safe for use on public roads. Issued only by Licensed Vehicle Testers like Rawson Motors, this certificate ensures that your vehicle meets key safety requirements.

You’ll need an RWC in the following situations:
- When selling a vehicle.
- When re-registering a vehicle that is currently unregistered.
- When clearing certain defect notices issued by authorities.

An RWC is valid for 30 days from the date of issue, so it’s essential to complete any required processes within that timeframe. Keep in mind that the cost of obtaining an RWC can vary, so we encourage you to contact us for a quote tailored to your vehicle’s needs. Roadworthy Inspection Process When your vehicle undergoes a roadworthy inspection at Rawson Motors, our skilled technicians assess the condition of critical safety components to ensure your car is road-ready. These inspections focus on the following areas: Wheels and tyres Brakes, suspension, and steering systems Seats and seatbelts Lights and reflectors Windscreen, windows, wipers, and washers Vehicle body and chassis Engine-related safety items If any of these components do not meet the required standards, you’ll be issued a failed test report detailing what needs repair. You then have 14 days to complete these repairs and return the vehicle for a re-inspection. If the vehicle isn’t re-inspected within 14 days, a new inspection will be required.

It’s worth noting that a roadworthy inspection does not assess the overall mechanical condition of the vehicle or ensure the operation of non-safety-related accessories. Limitations of a Roadworthy Certificate While an RWC is vital for ensuring your car’s safety on the road, it does not guarantee the vehicle is free from all mechanical or cosmetic issues. Specifically, it does not: Confirm the mechanical reliability of the vehicle. Assess the general condition or longevity of the car’s parts. Guarantee the functionality of non-safety accessories, like air-conditioning or rear demisters. For a detailed understanding of your vehicle’s overall condition, we recommend scheduling a comprehensive mechanical inspection in addition to your RWC. Convenience and Additional Services At Rawson Motors, we strive to make the roadworthy inspection process as simple and stress-free as possible. Located right here in Officer, our automotive workshop not only provides expert inspections but can also carry out any necessary repairs to ensure your vehicle passes with flying colours.
